Will Wright talks about his new game Spore

Spores 3D Creature creator

For those outside the gaming world Spore is the latest project from Will Wright one of the game industry's most fertile minds and the creator of the groundbreaking SimCity and The Sims, which has to date sold over 100 million copies worldwide. Wright has created the the Spore 3D creature creator with over a one million creatures being created in the space of a week.

Asked what he wanted people to get out of spore Wright said, “One of his goals for this whole thing has been to give somebody an awe-inspiring global view of reality, almost like a drug-induced epiphany with a computer. The kind of, "Oh, man, what if we were a molecule inside of a galaxy?" type thing. Can we transfer that experience -- that, I don't want to say drug-induced, but I guess it is, or almost theological meaning-of-life-type experience -- into an interactive computer game?

Clay Shirky 'Cognitive Surplus' Speech Web2.0 Conference

Don't know how to put this in context but Clay Shirky, professor at NYU's interactive telecommunications program, has written this insightful book called Here comes Everybody. Shirky goal 'is to describe the intersection of social tools and social life, helping people to understand both what's happening around them and how tools could be designed that better support social activity' but just watch the web video of his 'Cognitive Surplus' speech at Web 2.0 conference where he compares television viewing attention hours with wikipedias. Twice in the last couple of weeks I have had people say to me, 'Where do you find the time to do all this?' I tell them that I don't watch TV and if I do have it on it's usually live TV and on in the background. UPDATE - Good post from Neil McIntosh here

APA Future of Advertising Forum - Internet Advertising Bureau Talk

Advertising Producers Association Future of Advertising Forum - BAFTA - March 5th 2008

Here's the first video of the APA's conference at BAFTA which drew 170 APA and IPA members eager to learn about the latest advertising trends. The speakers came from different perspectives and their presentations enabled the delegates to contemplate the latest thinking in their own business planning. Speakers included the commercial director of Facebook, leading Executive Creative Directors and Planners, the founder of the innovative advertising for mobiles company, Blyk, experts on trends in advertising on the internet and branded programming.

This is the first of five web videos from the conference and the first being from the IAB given by it's CEO Guy Phillipson where he tells us amongst many other facts that close to 90% of UK homes now have access to broadband and that the UK will be the first major territory in the world where digital adspend will overtake total TV adspend sometime in mid to late 2009. Other talks include Rory Sutherland from Ogilvy, Antti Öhrling Co Founder of Blyk, Marco Rimini Worldwide Head of Communications Planning Mindshare and  John Nolan Head of N.One The Digital And Commercial Division Of North On.

Ford Balloons Viral from New Zealand

Here's an example of a piece of traditional TV advertising working in conjunction with a web video viral. Ogilvy London and Ford produced a traditional TV ad where cars floated away in the sky. I never quite understood it but JWT Auckland, which has the Ford account in NZ took the release of the original ad one step further by producing this obvious idea for a viral which then went onto become a traditional worldwide new story driving viewers back to the net and breaking records on youtube especially in the comments. via JWT blog

Lovebites - Branded Content Webisodic Series

JWT commissioned this two and half minute webisodic series financed by Sunsilk hair products which actually runs in the ad breaks of Sex in the City on TBS TV channel. The series is also clearly similar to Sex in the City too! Created with the actor Paul Reiser, from Mad About You sitcom. Having the same ratings as Sex in the City, a second series of sixty-five episodes was commissioned and Elle.com was brought in to partner the production. We are seeing the first signs of the merging TV and online. Will this model become commonplace, short and long form contextual content next to each other or will we see the multibranded fully financed content model or it's other name, product placement?
